The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from her grandmother Denise. Her aunt was an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art literature or theater. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay recognized that art is a powerful tool to promote social activism. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become interested in production for broadcast journalism. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence for a specific member of the Jury. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small shortly after she graduated from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
